Duties:
Candidates will be assigned to clinical duty in anesthesia and will participate in case management of large and small animals and supervision of final year veterinary students during clinical rotations. The successful candidate will not be expected to participate in didactic teaching (unless desired), but may be required to participate in laboratory instruction of second and third year veterinary students. There is an allotment of twenty days of vacation. After-hours duties will be shared equally with other clinicians in the anesthesia section with compensatory time off during the day for night call. There are 5 weeks off-clinics for self-study or for research.

Qualifications:
Candidates must have a DVM degree (or equivalent) and must be eligible for licensure within the province of Saskatchewan. A veterinarian with previous experience in general practice, a strong interest in anesthesia, willingness to learn and ability to work in a team environment will be considered. Anesthesia residency trained individuals are also encouraged to apply.

Salary:
The salary range is Can$54,193 to Can$84,677 per annum. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience. ACVA or ECVAA Boarded individuals are able to negotiate salary at a higher level. In addition, the successful candidate will be eligible for participation in the Clinical Earnings Supplement of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for after-hours work (approximate value Can$7,000/year). Cornell Clinical Fellows
College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University offers a two-year research fellowship for specialty-trained veterinarians. The purpose of the fellowship is to provide a significant research experience for clinical specialists committed to an academic career. This fellowship will provide an intensive research experience under the mentorship of a strong scientist who supports investigations of laboratory or clinical hypotheses relevant to clinical disease. Approximately 80% of the appointment will be devoted to research, with the remaining time available for clinical practice in the applicant's field of specialty. Positions are available for specialists in any discipline.

The anticipated starting date is August 1, 2010. The position includes a stipend of $65,000/yr, health insurance, other Cornell University benefits consistent with the Postdoctoral Fellow title and $15,000/yr in research supply funds.

The successful candidate will have a predominate appointment (60%) in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. Within the department, the anesthesia group is a part of the surgery and emergency critical care section. Applicants having credentials consistent with appointments at the assistant or associate professorial ranks will be considered.

The position will be approximately 70% professional practice, 15% discovery, and 15% teaching. Final decisions on percent and effort allocation within the position will be based on the appointment title. Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree and be board certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiology or be eligible to take the anesthesia board examination. A PhD focused in anesthesiology, pain management, or clinical pharmacology is required. The successful candidate will be expected to provide professional services which include in-house hospital duties, referral veterinary services, and professional practice consultations. Further, there is the expectation for the successful candidate to have experience in providing anesthesia procedures and protocols for a diverse population of farm animals that includes camelids, pot-bellied pigs, small ruminants, cattle and horses.

The large and small animal anesthesiology group offers a three-year ACVA residency program. Currently, three residents are enrolled. The individual selected for this position must have a strong interest in resident training. In discovery, the successful candidate will pursue an externally funded research program leading to publications in prominent discipline and research focused journals. Individuals hired at the associate professor rank will be expected to mentor younger faculty in hypothesis driven research. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree, must be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the Province of Ontario, and should be Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists (ACVA). Applications will also be considered from candidates who are eligible for the certification examination of the ACVA. Licensure in Ontario must be obtained before the start of the employment period.

Candidates must have demonstrated clinical experience, and possession of an advanced degree is desirable. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in clinical anesthesia and outstanding communication skills. The successful candidate will work with 4 other board certified anesthesiologists to provide service with the goal to grow our caseload in medicine, surgery, neurology, critical care, ophthalmology and other services as well as support a new Animal Cancer Centre (medicine, surgery, radiation). The candidate is expected to deliver 42-46 weeks of clinical service (number to be determined in advance). Shared on call duties are required. Incidental clinical instruction in anesthesia to residents and graduate students may be required. Service activities will include the management of large and small animals and consultations in the veterinary hospital, with the expectation to build significant caseload to support the success of the OVC-Health Sciences Centre. There will be limited administrative activities.

As part of the OVC-HSC vision, we will offer certain clinical services within extended hours in a new referral path. The successful candidate will be required to participate in this new referral path and have an opportunity to contribute to the development of this new initiative.

The University of Adelaide has established South Australia's first Vet School at its historic Roseworthy Campus. The Vet School's new facilities house the teaching laboratories for preclinical and clinical skills training. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital will open in 2010, ready for students as they enter their clinical years. The campus, is located on a 1600 ha property which includes a working farm. The rural setting allows excellent access to large animal species as well as a full service teaching hospital and ambulatory clinic.

The first intake of students in the University's three-year BSc pre-veterinary degree were enrolled in 2008, and from 2011 there will be continuing places every year for the three year postgraduate veterinary science degree.

The successful applicant will work with other faculty members in the development and delivery of the veterinary anesthesiology portion of the DVM curriculum, including clinical practicum teaching in the fourth year. UCVM will use a Distributed Veterinary Learning Community including public and private practice partners to deliver its fourth year practicum program and to provide a clinical environment for its faculty. Arrangements to provide veterinary anesthesiology services in an area referral practice will be established based on the interests of the candidate. Establishment of an independent or collaborative research program is expected, with the time devoted to these activities to be determined by the interests of the candidate. Individuals with an interest in pain research or critical care research are of particular interest, but other areas will be considered. The position is appointed to the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences (MBS), which is one of three academic departments constituting the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The current DVM cadre includes two ACVA board-certified anesthesiologists, one ACVA board-eligible anesthesia clinician, and two residents training for ACVA eligibility. In addition, the Medical Director of the Iams Pet Imaging facility, housed in the NCSU CVM, is also an ACVA board-certified anesthesiologist. This position involves classroom and clinical teaching, clinical service at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (VHUP) and creative scholarly activity (appropriate for the track) in the individual's area(s) of interest. The position is in the Small Animal Hospital and involves small animals and special species. After hours duty rotations are generally handled by the technical staff but residents on-call after hours or on weekends may require faculty supervision.

The Anesthesia Service at the small animal hospital currently consists of two full-time faculty members (both boarded), two full-time staff anesthesiologists (both boarded), four residents, and twenty full-time anesthesia technician positions. The small animal anesthesia service handles approximately 4000 cases/year, including dogs, cats, and a wide variety of special species. Being a tertiary referral center, a large percentage of the cases seen require intense, complex care. Anesthesia is in the Section of Critical Care along with the Emergency Service and the Intensive Care Unit; however, the clinical responsibilities are separate. The section is in the Department of Clinical Studies-Philadelphia as are the other clinical specialties. The Critical Care Section is an extremely active section of the veterinary hospital, providing extensive opportunities to participate in critical care research, rounds, and patient care.

The School of Veterinary Medicine has its main campus and small animal teaching hospital in close proximity to the School of Medicine and other schools of the University, affording excellent opportunities for collaboration. Research: The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded independent research program with an emphasis in anesthesiology or an anesthesiology-related discipline. The major responsibilities for this position are to teach and provide service in emergency/critical care in the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, to teach an elective course in emergency/critical care, and to develop a clinical or basic research program in conjunction with other faculty.

Opportunities exist for developing additional courses as this is a new program for this Department. Opportunities also exist for mentoring residents in anesthesiology (2 positions), for developing a residency program in emergency/critical care, and for mentoring interns (7 rotating small animal interns), veterinary students, and graduate students. The small animal emergency/critical care service in the Small Animal Teaching Hospital is an elective block for senior students that is highly popular.

The emergency/critical care service is supported by a dedicated technician for emergency receiving and by an ICU staffed with registered technicians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Some involvement in teaching laboratories will also be required. About 75% of time will be spent in clinics anaesthetising a variety of species (including dogs, cats, horses, ruminants and birds) and participating in various teaching duties; while the remaining time is available for other scholarly activities.
