POSTED 10/4/2007
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM The residency in veterinary anesthesia is a three-year program aimed at developing the clinical and technical skills required for administering anesthesia, perioperative patient care, sedation and pain management in a broad variety of species with varied medical conditions. The University of Pennsylvania is recognized as a training center by both the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists (ACVA) and more recently the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA) and the program is designed to fulfill the requirements for board qualification set forth by the ACVA and ECVAA, which may be reviewed on the corresponding websites at http://www.acva.org and http://www.ecva.eu.com, respectively.. Dates of Program: July 1st, 2008 - June 30, 2011 Salary: $ 27,000 (Year One) Closing date for applications: December 1st, 2007 APPLICATION PROCEDURE Qualifying applicants shall visit the AVMA matching program web page (www.virmp.org) to obtain more detailed information regarding the program as well as the application procedure. ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE PROCESSED THROUGH THE AVMA MATCHING PROGRAM. It is expected that applicants have graduated from veterinary school at least 1 year prior to application and have a one-year rotating internship or equivalent clinical experience. The application shall include a (a) Letter of intent indicating the reasons for seeking this program and professional career goals (b) Current curriculum vitae (c) Transcripts of University performances (d) List of three persons (including full addresses and phone/fax/e-mail information) knowledgeable of the applicant's veterinary school performance and clinical training and subsequent experiences and willing to provide a letter of reference. Foreign nationals should be prepared to pay $1,000+ to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for expedited visa processing, in addition to standard visa fees. Because the residency commences on July 1st, this is necessary in order to avoid the standard 6-month wait to obtain the required H1-B1 visa. An interview is not required, but it is recommended to familiarize applicants with the program.
